Indulge your senses with the spectacular beauty of Andalusia without the crowds typically found in coastal resorts during this full-day visit to charismatic Ronda. The city is famous worldwide for its dramatic escarpments and views, and for the deep El Tajo gorge that carries the rio Guadalevín through its centre.
Depart the pier for the scenic, approximate 2-hour drive to Ronda. En route, proceed inland and through the scenic Serrania Mountain region.
Ronda
Ronda's cultural background combines Moorish influence with Christian Spanish remains. However, most visitors come here because of Ronda's unique setting in which two parts of the town come together astride the breath-taking 300-foot-deep (90- metre) Tajo Gorge. The gorge's steep cliffs plunge into the Guadalevin River ravine. It was this near-impregnable location that kept Ronda in Muslim hands until 1485, when Catholic kings finally conquered it. Upon arrival, see the 13th-century Almocabar Gate, which provided access to the castle, town and the 16th-century Carlos V Gate.
Bullring
Your walking tour commences along the ring road towards the bullring, which dates back to the Catholic kings and is recognised as the oldest bullring in Spain. From here, pass through the Paseo Blas Infante for a spectacular panoramic vista over the Tajo Gorge, then proceed towards Plaza España across the 18th-century New Bridge, whose central part was formerly used as a prison and is today the symbol of the town.
Bosco House
A stop is made for a visit the Salesian San Juan Bosco House, which is renowned for its beautiful ceramics and gardens, and excellent views to the other side of the Tajo Gorge. Next, continue past the House of the Moorish Kings, the 18th-century Palace of the Marquis of Salvatierra and the well-preserved Arab baths that date from the 13th century.
Mondragón Palace
Your walking tour then passes by the Plaza del Gigante, site of the Mondragón Palace. Constructed in 1314 by Abolemic, the King of Ronda, it has been the residence of many kings and governors ever since.
Santa María La Mayor
Your tour concludes with a brief visit to the 13th-century church, 'Santa María La Mayor', a former mosque that was converted into a church by King Ferdinand. Following your guided visit, some free time is made available for lunch and further exploration on your own.
